Our Public Spirit FAQ’s

What is a Giving Circle?

A giving circle is an innovative way to link our passion to our philanthropy. It allows us to pool our resources and have a larger impact on our community.

What is “Our Public Spirit?” (OPS)

Our Public Spirit is an initiative – from 2005-2009 – to promote philanthropy among African American and Asian Pacific Islander women throughout the Greater Boston area. OPS explores the giving traditions and practices among women of color and works to expand their support for social change and social justice work. It is a collaboration of the Boston Women’s Fund, Haymarket People’s Fund and Women’s Theological Center. OPS is funded through the Kellogg Foundation.

What – and who – is a philanthropist?

A philanthropist is simply someone who makes an active effort to promote human welfare. Communities of color – particularly women – have historically been viewed as the recipients of philanthropy rather than the donors. However, these groups have a solid tradition of giving talent, time, tradition and treasure to advance positive social change.

What are the goals of OPS?

The goal of the project is to connect people, communities and organizations to achieve positive social change through philanthropy. OPS seeks to (1) increase donors of color for social change philanthropy and (2) increase women of color in leadership roles in the philanthropic community.

What has OPS accomplished so far?
To date, we have produced the following outcomes:
  • formed a giving circle;
  • released a free publication called “Expanding the Circle, An African American and Asian Women’s Perspective on Giving” which documents our research on best practices and giving patterns among diverse communities (download Expanding the Circle)
  • conducted a series of Socially Responsible Investment workshops;
  • conducted a series of conversations on Women & Philanthropy;
  • delivered presentations on research findings at local and national conferences;
  • diversified the donor base among women of color; and
  • increased awareness of women of color in philanthropy through the media.
