We remain committed to doing philanthropy differently — in partnership with communities — so we called on the public.
We asked them, "Who are the innovative changemakers who have touched your life and the lives of your community? Who are the women, girls, and gender-expansive individuals who have fought for their communities and have yet to receive their flowers?"
Often, such pivotal work by leaders from our communities goes unsung. We want to change that together.
We received over 80 incredible nominations of unsung heroes and beloved community leaders. We assembled a Selection Committee of BWF staff, board, grantee partners, and community members to review these nominations, research nominated leaders, conduct interviews with references, and make recommendations for selection.
We prioritized individuals who have not yet received any awards or press, founders of one-of-a-kind organizations, and disruptors tackling racial, gender, economic, and social justice issues with an intersectional lens. These 40 honorees — our Liberation Leaders — emerged as some of the most
innovative changemakers trying to create new
systems for our communities to thrive.
Women and gender-expansive individuals are often at the forefront of movements and systems change work, yet they receive little to no recognition.
Join the effort to give these women and gender-expansive leaders their flowers while they’re still with us!
Follow us on social media and stay connected with our email communications as we uplift their work and leadership in the coming months.
